The Ruby Slipper Cafe in the News
The Ruby Slipper Cafe was rated “Very Good to Excellent” in all three categories (Food, Decor & Service) of the 2009 Zagat guide: The “southern breakfasts have just a little fancy thrown in” and the “brandy milk punch at brunch makes drinking milk fun again” at this “welcome” new daytime american in Mid-City, a neighborhood that “sorely needed a breakfast spot”; it’s a “good value” too, and the “cute” “comfortable” “corner location” invites diners to “socialize as they wait” for a table.
The Ruby Slipper Cafe was reviewed by WWL-TVs secret food critic, Napoleon, on June 25, 2010. He awarded us Three Stars and provided a very gracious review overall “The Ruby Slipper is found down a Mid-City side street, but it didn’t take long for word to spread about this place. Now people from many other neighborhoods make the trek for breakfast and brunch. It’s no wonder. The place is inherently charming, well-run and serves dishes that would be at home at much more upscale restaurants“. Read the Review
The Ruby Slipper Cafe was reviewed by reknowned New Orleans food critic Tom Fitzmorris in April, 2010. Tom awarded Three Stars (”Worth Crossing Town For”), stating that “The menu is as creative as any this side of Brennan’s, and uses excellent fresh ingredients carrying pedigrees you’d find in a gourmet bistro (applewood-smoked bacon, stone-ground grits, and fresh local shrimp, to name three). Particularly good is the restaurant’s use of local flavors not often seen at breakfast. Like pork or duck debris, or bananas Foster.” Read the full review!

The Ruby Slipper Cafe was the focus of Brett Anderson’s September 2009 Eating Your Words column in the Times-Picayune. Brett had this to say about Ruby’s Crabcake Breakfast…”this cake with a nut-brown top crust contained lump meat any chef in town would be proud to serve. The eggs were perfectly over-medium, the grits thick but well-shy of solid, the biscuit warm and buttery. I ordered a side of corned beef hash; you should, too. It all made me look forward to the next time I put myself in the hands of Ruby Slipper chef Nate Hilderbrand. ” See the full article
